On a trip to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, for her seventh birthday, Aspen Brown unearthed a 2.95-carat golden brown diamond. The remarkable find is the "second-largest registered by a park guest this year," only being bested by a 3.29-carat diamond found in March. The birthday girl was at the park along with her dad and grandmother.
Aspen’s discovery, which she picked up from a path on the side of the designated search area, was about the size of a green pea and park officials verified that the gem was, in fact, a diamond. “Aspen’s diamond has a golden-brown color and a sparkling luster,” says assistant park superintendent Waymon Cox, “It’s certainly one of the most beautiful diamonds I’ve seen in recent years.”
Visitors to Crater of Diamonds State Park find on average one or two diamond discoveries every day and since the site was recognized as a diamond hotspot, more than 75-thousand diamonds have been unearthed there. The 37-acre treasure-hunting field, formed from an eroded volcanic crater, also holds other gems like amethysts and garnets.
