GOOD NEWS: EMT Saves Partner Who Had Stroke Behind The Wheel

Being a trained Aetna Ambulance EMT, Ray Berwick realized right away when his partner Chris Cabral was suffering a stroke. Berwick rushed him to the hospital and there the trauma team immediately operated on Cabral, who had a blood clot near his carotid artery.

Cabral is expected to make a full recovery and says having his stroke while he was in the ambulance was kind of like winning the lottery. “He recognized something wasn’t right,” he says of Berwick. “I was inches away from dying and my partner saved my life.”

The partners have been working together for the last two and a half years and Cabral says he hopes to be riding with Berwick in the ambulance as his partner sometime this spring.
