After a long search by more than 100 volunteers, a 40-year-old man from Ohio has been found alive after being missing for six nights near Mount St. Helens. Matthew Matheny was spotted by members of the Skamania County Volcano Rescue Team on Wednesday on the flanks of the mountain after last being seen on Thursday.
The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office reports that he was taken by helicopter to a Vancouver hospital where he was listed in satisfactory condition. He was gone for six nights, but no one was ready to give up and their persistence paid off.
"I don’t know that he’s able to walk but I know he’s talking, so that’s a huge piece for us that he’s able to talk and appears to be - other than being dehydrated and such from being out in the elements for as many days as he was - that he appears to be in remarkably good shape,” Sheriff Mark Nelson says.
