GOOD NEWS: Tokyo Cafe Allows Customers To Work To Pay For Meals

Diners who can’t afford to eat out can still enjoy a meal at one Tokyo restaurant, as long as they’re willing to work for it. At Mirai Shokudo, the only staff is owner Sekai Kobayashi, so she offers customers the option of paying for food or working for 50 minutes instead to help her out.

The tiny restaurant only seats 12 and Kobayashi gives those working off their meal tasks like serving food and clearing tables and dishes. She opened the restaurant two years ago to create “a place where everyone is welcome and everyone fits in.”

"I use this system because I want to connect with hungry people who otherwise couldn't eat at restaurants because they don't have money," she explains. So far, she says over 500 folks have taken her up on the option to work for their meals.
